Last week we continued to study patterns in weather. After completing our study on Winter, we applied what we had learned in order to study animals' needs in the winter. We studied migration and hibernation. While learning about hibernation, we specifically studied the various designs of shelters these animals need. After studying shelters, we took what we had learned and designed our own shelters to protect eggs from the winter weather.
Scholars were given various materials including paper plates, toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes, and kleenex boxes. Scholars designed and improved their shelters for two days. After the two days, we took our shelters to the garden. Scholars placed their eggs in their shelters, and we returned to the classroom.
The next morning we returned to the garden to measure the success of the shelter. Majority of the shelters successfully protected the eggs over night. Those scholars then presented their shelter to the class and explained why their design was successful. The remaining scholars explained why their shelter was not successful, and they described what they would do to improve their shelter next time.
This design challenge was so much fun! Each scholar was engaged and diligent in their own design. I was thrilled with the results!
